21) JOGLE Janalogy

A few years ago, my good friend, Mary, and I decided that we wanted to cycle from John O'Groats to Land's End (JOGLE). I won't go into too much detail; but suffice to say that a combination of naïvety, determination and Vaseline will get you a long way and we completed the ride in 12 days. One of our Janathon number, Chris@Silly'sJogle (go and check out his website!), is planning an altogether more impressive feat by running from John O'Groats to Land's End later this year and I'm really looking forward to following his progress.

Something Mary and I insisted on doing each day wasn't just the no-double-dipping-in-the-Vaseline-pot-policy but also looking at a big map of the UK in a road atlas to see how far we'd covered. This was pretty punishing in the first few days, it looked like we'd accomplished barely anything; but there was a point when we thought, "Holy moley, look at how much of Britain we've cycled!". Since you know I love a good Janathon progress analogy (a Janalogy, if you will), I thought I'd make a JOGLE map to show you where we've got to at the end of Week 3:

JOGLEJANATHON
Day 21 - we have made it 610 miles to Herefordshire!

Only 268 miles to go. I wonder if Jules@2011 will make us all a nice cup of tea when we make it into Cornwall?

Day 21 - Cycle commuting
Distance: 3.90 miles
Time: 22:14
Speed: 10.5 mph

Day 21 - Inspired (but not inspiring) run home from work
Distance: 3.86 miles
Time: 0:46:01
Av Pace: 11:55 min/mile
Cake rating: 4/5 (inspired by listening to a man who'd rowed the Atlantic and climbed Everest; he made my run home seem very insignificant in comparison but the route seem very dull)
score4

Cumulative Janathising: 86.0 miles running + 90.6 miles cycling + 1.4 miles swimming

  1. Not wishing to be negative, but that means ..

Cornwall is a lot blooming longer than it looks on the map!!

  2. Any Janathoner visiting Cornwall is more than welcome to pop in for a cuppa!

I think Chris (@sillysjogle) will be running quite a bit more than 878 miles - as mad as a JoGLE runner needs to be, they won't generally run on motorways...! ;D

(@mrlumpybadger - Cornwall is about 90miles long, give or take!)

Katie, if there was a prize for most fun Janathon blog, yours would get my vote hands down - keep up the good work!!

  3. PS - have just checked RunningFree, and Janathoners have so far *run* 8417 miles in total, at least nine JoGLEs!!!

  4. Ah, thanks, Jules! Stick the kettle on, we're all on our way.
Unfortunately, google maps wouldn't support a running route, just 'avoid highways'. I mentioned naïvety: this pretty much resembles to route we tried to take (A9>A7>A6>A49>A30) - I think Chris will have thought his route out a bit more than we did!
